Search Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station Communities Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station is located in southwest Colorado Springs. It falls under Air Force Space Command. The idea for a command and control center was formalized during the Cold War in the late 1950s. It became fully operational as NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) on April 20, 1966. On May 12, 2008 the Command Center located within the Cheyenne Mountain Complex was re-designated as the NORAD and U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) Alternate Command Center. It also serves as a training site for crew qualification. NORAD and USNORTHCOM are now headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs, established in 1871, is located at the base of Pikes Peak. It is at an altitude of 6,035 feet, so it may take some time to adjust to the elevation. Because of its mild, semi-arid climate, it has endless opportunities for recreational and sporting activities year round. It also serves as home to the Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base and Fort Carson Army Post. |
