Search Fort Carson Communities Fort Carson was established in 1942 following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. It was originally known as Camp Carson, named after the legendary Army scout “Kit” Carson. In 1954 Camp Carson became Fort Carson. It is located just south of Colorado Springs. Fort Carson is the home of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Brigade Combat Teams of the 4th Infantry Division, the 10th Special Forces Group, the 71st Ordnance Group, the 4th Engineer Battalion, the 759th Military Police Battalion, the 10th Combat Support Hospital, and the 43rd Sustainment Brigade. There are three elementary schools and one middle school on post. High school students are bused to Fountain-Fort Carson High School in nearby Fountain. Also on post are Evans Army Community Hospital, a veterinary treatment facility, banking facilities and shopping including a thrift store. The Colorado Springs transit system operates on post. Colorado Springs, established in 1871, is located at the base of Pikes Peak. It is at an altitude of 6,035 feet, so it may take some time to adjust to the elevation. Because of its mild, semi-arid climate, it has endless opportunities for recreational and sporting activities year round. It also serves as home to the Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station. |
