Search Peterson Air Force Base Communities Peterson Air Force Base, home of the 21st Space Wing, is adjacent to the east of Colorado Springs. It originally served as a civilian airport for Colorado Springs, but it became a military field during World War II. The base is part of the Peterson Complex which also includes Schriever Air Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Station. Four major military headquarters are located here – North American Aerospace Defense Command, U.S. Northern Command, Air Force Space Command and Army Strategic Command. A new commissary and base exchange opened in 2007. A U.S. post office is located on base offering complete postal services. It also rents lock boxes. City buses make stops at the Peterson gate. Colorado Springs, established in 1871, is located at the base of Pikes Peak. It is at an altitude of 6,035 feet, so it may take some time to adjust to the elevation. Because of its mild, semi-arid climate, it has endless opportunities for recreational and sporting activities year round. It also serves as home to the Air Force Academy and Fort Carson Army Post. |
